A note about the pretty pictures

Some of the artwork on this website was created or modified using generative AI.

I know that AI-generated art is complicated and controversial. There are real and important questions about artists and creative labor, copyright, consent, cultural appropriation, transparency, and environmental impact. I don't want to pretend those conversations disappear simply because I've chosen to use these tools.

I use generative AI primarily as a creative and design tool: to develop visual concepts, create or modify artwork, and bring ideas I've already imagined into something I can use on the site. Some images involve considerably more AI assistance than others. Where possible, I try to use AI intentionally and thoughtfully rather than treating it as a replacement for human creativity.

I'm also aware that AI isn't environmentally weightless. The computing, electricity, water, data centers, and physical infrastructure behind these tools are real. Even when an individual interaction seems small, those interactions happen at enormous scale. Choosing to use AI means participating in that footprint, and I think that's worth acknowledging.

None of this resolves the ethical questions surrounding generative AI. It is simply an acknowledgment that I've made a choice while recognizing that choice comes with tradeoffs.

I welcome conversations about those tradeoffs, about AI, artists, creativity, environmental impact, ethics, or the choices I've made in creating this site. You don't have to like AI, and you don't have to agree with my decision to use it.

For me, part of being thoughtful about technology is being willing to ask uncomfortable questions about the tools we're using and to be transparent about when we're using them.
